Porn Killing
Bond hearing set for men charged in Kocis killing on fugitive from justice charges.
Two Virginia Beach men accused in the slaying of a gay pornographic film producer in Dallas Township are scheduled for a bond hearing this morning.
Harlow Cuadra, 25, and Joseph Kerekes, 33, have been in custody in Virginia Beach without bail on charges of being fugitives from justice.
State police at Wyoming, Dallas Township police and the Luzerne County District Attorney’s Office on May 15 accused the pair of the Jan. 24 killing of Bryan Kocis.
The body of the 44-year-old Kocis was found by firefighters who responded to a fire at his home at 60 Midland Drive. An autopsy determined that Kocis was dead before the fire, and had suffered 28 stab wounds including a slashed throat, according to court records.
Investigators maintain that Cuadra and Kerekes conspired to kill Kocis, whom they considered their main rival in the gay pornographic movie business. Kocis owned Cobra Video, a company that produced and sold gay pornographic films.
Cuadra and Kerekes are partners in an Internet-based gay pornographic production company and a male escort service.
The two men are fighting their transfer to Pennsylvania to face the homicide and related charges. An extradition hearing is scheduled for June 14 in Virginia Beach General District Court.
Early in the investigation, authorities sought information from two men in San Diego and a person from Indiana University in Indiana, according to search warrant affidavits that became unsealed this week.
Investigators claimed Sean Lockhart, businessman Merlin Lee Bergeron and an unnamed person from Indiana University had been in contact with Kocis before he was killed, the search warrants affidavits say.
Bergeron couldn’t be reached for comment, and the identity of the person from Indiana University was not disclosed.
Lockhart appeared in several movies for Kocis’ company. He was named a defendant in a federal lawsuit Kocis’ company filed on a claim that Lockhart violated terms of his contract.
According to arrest papers, Cuadra and Kerekes met with Lockhart and his partner, Grant Roy, at a Las Vegas adult film convention at which they discussed making pornographic movies. Cuadra and Kerekes continued to meet with Lockhart and Roy. During a visit to a San Diego nude beach on April 28, investigators secretly recorded Cuadra telling Lockhart that he was inside the Dallas Township home when Kocis was killed, according to arrest papers.
Cuadra’s former lawyer, Barry Taylor, said he’s no longer involved in the case because Virginia authorities have seized all finances and properties belonging to Cuadra and Kerekes.
