Poland against Porn & gay rights

There is growing support for a bill in the Polish Parliament that would mean one year in jail for possession of pornographic magazines material - with even longer jail times for selling it.

The current Polish Government came to power with the promise to create a moral revolution, but they have not always been successful.

A quest by the Polish President Lech Kaczynski to shut down the brothels in Warsaw failed. They are open, visible and advertise freely. Parked cars get their daily dose of advertisements for services put under the windshield wipers.

But the Government is undeterred - the new law proposed will cover every form of pornography. Even internet pornography would be outlawed, subjecting both the viewer and provider to the harsh penalties of the law.

There will be no exceptions - even adults with their own, self made home porn movies or pictures would be arrested and jailed.

At the same time, the authorities have become increasingly intolerant towards Polish homosexuals. Last year's gay rights march in Warsaw was banned, gay clubs and bars have been closed down, and the government is moving to outlaw any discussion of homosexuality in schools.

These moves are coupled with political witch-hunts amateur porn magazines against the left and are causing concern that an EU member is implementing such draconian measures, which may breach European human rights law.
